Mermaids

Image
Mermaids are a subject I come back to on a regular basis. Someday I'd like to put them in a story -  but in the meantime, I populate my sketch books with watery sea maidens.    This was one I posted a few years back on my Instagram and she's still a favorite.  I was so happy with her hair and the pearls and just the general boiency of the drawing. I used metallic pens to highlight, too, but I feel they get a bit lost in the photograph.  Crayon over watercolor here. I have a lot of kids, so I've never fully had the opportunity to fall out of love with a good, old Crayola 🖍 😄. Ah, here's a flash back. I drew this one in 2014. I came across it in Google photos just the other day. I still like what I did with her legs and flippers and finger webbing, but I had a chuckle over my over use of  filters. It was my first tablet, and I had a lot of fun playing with effects over photos my art. These days I generally keep it original when I post.

Blacks and Bays, Dapples and Grays: Ethereal Equines.

I'm the kind of person who gets on kicks. If I discover an author I love, I'm going to be thrilled if they've written a lot because I'm going to keep checking their books out until they literally run out.  I tend to do the same with art. If I create a new character in my head or discover I like to draw a specific creature, I'm usually going to be sketching them ad nausium in every pose I can think of. Kind of Randomly, the very first art obsession of mine that I can remember is of dinosaurs. But the second one was Horses, and it's lasted a heck of a lot longer.  Equines of some sort seem to make an appearance on almost all of my sketch pages. I especially love doing fantasy equines. Horses have a form that flows particularly well to adapt for ethereal fantastical work.I like how unicorns ,especially, really don't push the boundaries of what is believable, physically, in the real world. The natural world often feels absolutely mysterious, moody, and astoundi...

Hello. I'm Janet.

Hello, friend. I'm glad your here. I'm Janet Praught Morgan. I'm a mom of 7 and wife to a mountain man, but I moonlight as an artist and chronic reader.  I've had various social media over the years but  never had a place that really felt like a home for my art. So I guess this is it. I plan on dropping random pictures and sketches and maybe talking about art and books and life a little, when the mood strikes.   I may post some of my favorites from my old ink_and_tome IG account where I used to challenge myself to create illustrations from books I was currently reading. I really enjoyed doing those projects but felt a little hemmed in when I came to what kind of posts I made. I recently illustrated a book for author (and dear friend) Bethany Wallace and I can't wait to update you on that, hopefully it will be out later this summer.  I've got a few other projects in the works at the moment that I'll be sharing snippets of as I go. Taking my art seriously is n...
