Blacks and Bays, Dapples and Grays: Ethereal Equines.

I'm the kind of person who gets on kicks. If I discover an author I love, I'm going to be thrilled if they've written a lot because I'm going to keep checking their books out until they literally run out.

I tend to do the same with art. If I create a new character in my head or discover I like to draw a specific creature, I'm usually going to be sketching them ad nausium in every pose I can think of. Kind of Randomly, the very first art obsession of mine that I can remember is of dinosaurs. But the second one was Horses, and it's lasted a heck of a lot longer.

Equines of some sort seem to make an appearance on almost all of my sketch pages.

I especially love doing fantasy equines. Horses have a form that flows particularly well to adapt for ethereal fantastical work.I like how unicorns ,especially, really don't push the boundaries of what is believable, physically, in the real world. The natural world often feels absolutely mysterious, moody, and astounding to me. Real people, places, and things can feel magical in the sense that they are breathtakingly beautiful or uncanny in some way. I'd like my art to reflect that.

Sure, I love drawing high fantasy as much as anyone,  it's a lot of fun! But I also like playing with smaller changes to the forms we know from every day. Maybe it's just a horse of a different color,  or maybe it's a whimsical elongation of form.

Sharing pages from my sketch books feels a little vulnerable.  There is always work on my sketch pages that I don't like. But I do like the peeks into art process that you can get  looking through rough sketches.  I love it when I get the chance to see an artist I admire share some "behind the scenes" work.

I have a favorite walk near my home I really like that is at the edge a pretty thick forest.  If you take it at the right time of day,  you can see this amazing green gold illumination through the dark border of the wood. This last illustration attempts the capture that feeling of magic that I get at that border between worlds.
